Alleghany Highlands Recreation

With hundreds of thousands of acres of protected public land in Bath and Highland Counties, the region is a paradise for outdoor recreation lovers. The George Washington National Forest, Lake Moomaw, Douthat State Park, The Nature Conservancy's Warm Springs Mountain Preserve and Highland Wildlife Management Areas provide opportunities for hunting, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, camping, birdwatching, and even guided nature programs.

Despite the Alleghany Highlands' remote location, it also has a wide array of arts and cultural offerings, including the internationally known Garth Newel Music Center in Warm Springs, which has its own resident chamber quartet and also hosts a variety of guest musicians as well at the Virginia Blues and Jazz Festival. Both Highland and Bath Counties hold music events throughout the year, from bluegrass jamborees to street dances.

Hot Springs, Warm Springs, and Monterey are also home to a variety of art galleries as well as antique dealers. And many of the villages here having walking tours devoted to appreciation of local historic architecture. Be sure to take in the local festivals as well, including the Highland Maple Festival, Bath County Triathlon, Hands and Harvest Festival, and many more.
